“Diamond nights and ruby lights, high in the sky … No need to ask. He’s a smooth operator.”
Keepsake’s Spring 2013 collection Diamond Lights, that hit stores this week, puts Sade’s hit Smooth Operator into our minds. In the music video, style icon Sade can be seen in her signature plated pony tail, red lipstick and gold hooped earrings that has inspired Jean Paul Gaultier to show Sade lookalikes on the catwalk. Prior to her career as a pop star, Helen Folasade Adu studied fashion at Central St Martin’s, modelled and even designed her own menswear line. She fronted the funk band Pride before going solo with her project Sade that earned her the indisputable status of best-selling British female music artist in the US. Adele still has a lot of catching up to do…
The music video to Smooth Operator shows a group of gangsters in a nightclub with Sade singing on stage and TV actress Amanda Pays (before starring in Max Headroom) in the role of the hostess and gangster’s girlfriend. Both women look stylish and glamorous in their evening wear. While Sade is wearing a long sleeved white dress, Amanda is strutting a glamorous black peplum dress.
Keepsake’s Shake It Out dress features an asymmetrical, slightly elongated peplum. The dress is formal and fashionable, glamorous and girly. Other Diamond Lights styles include hems that plummet to the floor and rise to the occasion to reveal lots of leg in the form of minis, asymmetrical and triangular hemlines. From bejeweled beading, pleather fabric combinations, doily-like lace overlays, tweed texture and brocade fabric, Keepsake’s glamazon appeal is in the details. The gemstone-inspired pattern of Keepsake’s first collection for spring resembles enlarged prisms of finely cut rock reflected by light in shades of purple and grey. The jewel motif solidifies seamlessly amongst a colour palette that contrasts in brightness with hues such as black, ivory, royal berry, royal navy, teal, hot pink and mint, found in dresses, skirts, bodices, jumpsuits and jackets to match.
Formal and feminine as always, this spring take on a well-established formula is something of a revitalization of the girl gone glam. From the collection’s crystal print to the jewel-encrusted pieces, Keepsake shines a light on the glamazon through a myriad of high-voltage, embellished looks. These styles are a fresh vibe and cheeky alternatives to the simple party dress circuit. It’s time to impress in a dress.
